The reasons I think this way is because the SRA-FV represents the commingling of two distinct approaches to risk assessment of (sexual) violence: actuarial assessment with structured professional judgement. This kind of flawed methodology is another example of adjusted actuarial assessment, which we know guarantees inaccurate results by double counting variance after it has been accounted for as well as anchoring effects brought on by actuarial assessment alone.

1) There has been at least 3 changes to the experience tables to the Static-99 since 2007 (see this blog: http://forensicpsychologist.blogspot.com/2013/11/static-99-norms-du-jour-get-yet-another.html). This does not instill confidence in the use of that tool, which is an essential element to the SRV-FV.
2) The SRV-FV is loaded heavily on PCL-R items which don’t add much to SVP hearings in the way of being accurate see this Karen Franklin blog for a review: http://forensicpsychologist.blogspot.com/2014/01/new-evidence-of-psychopathy-tests-poor.html (The Role and Reliability of the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised in U.S. Sexually Violent Predator Evaluations: A Case Law Survey by DeMatteo, D., Edens, J. F., Galloway, M., Cox, J., Toney Smith, S. and Formon, D. (2013). Law and Human Behavior). Of course page 15 on the PCL-R manual itself says that the tool does not predict sexual violence in SVP’s.
3) The item of Grievance Thinking on the SRA-FV is such a widely applicable concept that it cannot possibly discriminate between those who would sexually reoffend from those who would not any better than politicians who would close down traffic lanes in retaliation from than those who would not.

If I am wrong about the SRA-FV, Dr. Thornton will have made a tremendous contribution to the field and, ultimately society at large.Jeffrey C.
