We need someone to update the Wikipedia article in the Macdonald triad which doesn't indicate that there is any controversy over it's usefulness.Bill Raybarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04983019883413164948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2361358365193630538.post-64927556938858640032012-05-03T18:49:02.938-07:002012-05-03T18:49:02.938-07:00Very astute observation.Very astute observation.SteMotsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05926077976614320840noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2361358365193630538.post-44664785689469216662012-05-03T14:56:32.504-07:002012-05-03T14:56:32.504-07:00You couldn't ask for more dramatic irony than ...You couldn't ask for more dramatic irony than naming a trilogy of behaviours which includes cruelty to animals "McDonalds"!Cavall de Querhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17687910584661433398noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2361358365193630538.post-84472577267603028702012-05-03T06:55:54.347-07:002012-05-03T06:55:54.347-07:00The subject of my masters thesis (MSc. It seems that even in literature reviews, people have different perspectives (or perhaps cognitive bias).

My research examined the predictive validity between animal cruelty and the serial violent offender in different countries and amongst different cultures. Whilst it seems that the MacDonald's Triad is largely mistrusted with regards to euresis and fire-setting, there does seem to be a valid connection between wilful animal cruelty and the serial violent offender (though this is dependent upon severity and categorisation) in most westernised countries. The problem is that there has been so little unbiased academic research on this subject.

Some of the more recent studies have examined animal cruelty in relation to interpersonal violence and have found an alarming correlation between animal cruelty and domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse or disabled abuse.

There are many theories as to why animal abuse and violence towards (usually weaker) humans may be related:
Violence against animals, like violence perpetrated against the weak and the vulnerable, reflect dominance and control;
Early aggressive behaviours or tendencies may be acted out first towards smaller animals, before 'graduating' onto people;
Animal abuse may either be seen as either a sadistic act or may be related to power and control;
Maybe those who wantonly abuse animals have a desire to exercise control over something or someone who cannot retaliate as easily.

To cruelly torture a sentient being takes a certain type of individual lacking in remorse and empathy. It would seem logical that such an individual, lacking in empathy and remorse, would be far more likely than most to continue similar cruel and violent acts towards vulnerable people.

In my opinion, this is an area which should not be ignored, nor should it be taken lightly.SteMotsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05926077976614320840noreply@blogger.com
